How Search Engine Works? Crawling, Indexing And Ranking Explained

On the internet that is on world wide web, there is unimaginable amount of data and information available. We are talking here about millions of terra bytes of data. Where does this data come from? Well, the data here is nothing but the websites with articles, images, videos etc. These websites are published on the internet by bloggers, web developers and large companies.

So, whenever there is a new website published on the internet, crawler of the search engine is the one that first comes into play. Crawler of any search engine is the bot that crawls all the URLs of the articles published on a website which has been newly created and collects all the data available which it then stores in the search engine’s local server. So, the function of the crawler is to to collect all the data from the websites on the internet and then store that data on the local server of the search engine.

On the local server, there is a indexer which performs an important function of categorizing the data collected by the crawler. Crawler actually collects the data from the websites of all categories such as technical, educational, financial, science, sports, news, automobiles etc and it just stores that data to the local server without categorizing them. Here comes the function of indexer to arrange the data available on the local server into different categories to which the data is related to.

Categorizing the data is very important process because it enables the search engine to display its users relevant results based on the searched keywords in the quickest possible time. For example, if someone searches for ‘latest Ferrari cars’, the search engine immediately recognizes the keyword belongs to automobiles category and it displays that user the websites that are categorized under automobiles only and contain the keywords searched by the user. This way search engines are able to deliver the quick and most relevant results to its users.

What websites to be displayed on the top of search results which is called SERP or Search Engine Result Page for searched keywords is completely based on the ranking algorithm of search engine. Websites that have unique and original content that provides value to the users generally have better rankings and search engine obviously prefers them to display on top of search results.
